2013 CES Size

In IT, size matters. You just have to be careful, and/or well-educated, to figure out what is being measured and which metrics matter the most. Notice that the official CES report is this year measuring "the largest" show ever by actual square footage. Though the official stats quote the number of vendors and visitors, they don't directly compare either to previous years. Here's what the CEA sent out today:

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced today that the 2013 International CES is the largest in the show's 45+ year history, with 1.92 million net square feet of exhibit space. The previous record was 1.86 million net square feet of space at the 2012 International CES. More than 3,250 exhibitors unveiled some 20,000 new products at the 2013 CES, drawing more than 150,000 attendees, including more than 35,000 from more than 170 countries outside the United States. Owned and produced by CEA, the 2013 International CES is the world's largest annual innovation event and concluded today.

Casio at CES 2013

By Chuck Hajdu

One of the events I was most looking forward to at CES was the Casio press conference. Over the past few years this has always been a great event where their CEO would introduce their latest wonderful photography products. We have seen some great cameras and software in the past and looked forward to this year’s announcements.

Prior to the event we were standing in line and had a great chat with their new PR people. They promised us better responses in the future because the previous staff was inadequate. It looked like it was going to be a great press conference! The only disappointment was the press kit was a plastic bracelet and not a USB drive mockup of the camera we were waiting to see.

Once we went in we took a seat, got a bottle of water (it is a desert you know) and waited patiently. The first couple of product announcements were routine, dull things like watches. OK but nothing good yet.

Then we got to the meat of the meal!! The new Signage Division!! Huh??? Signage? What the hell is a signage division? It turns out we had a nice presentation showing their new signage product (starting at $10k) with examples of how it works. I could waste your time and mine by going into detail but I won’t. If you own a small business and want to spend a lot of money just email us and we’ll fill you in.

After the press conference we asked their PR people about their camera division and got the bad news: Casio only sells digital cameras in Japan now. They have pulled out of the American market completely. It’s said but it looks like another camera company has thrown in the towel. The power of the Smartphone with a camera is taking over the basic camera level completely.

Sales of PCs

I just heard something very interesting. According to Fox Business News people are now replacing their PCs every 10 years instead of every 5 years as they did in the past. With the proliferation of Smartphones and tablets there is no longer a need for a new PC every couple of years.

In today's economic climate this makes perfect sense. Just as the average age of a car on the road in the USA is now 10.5 years old, the age of other tools, kike computers, is increasing also. It's nice to see people using things that work for longer periods of time. Why replace something that works fine for what we need it for.

Now if we can only get iFruit Fan Boyz and Gurlz to stop wasting resources and money by running out to buy products that are no better than the ones they currently have.

Computex Taipei

Enjoying CES? Want more? The Taiwan Bureau of Foreign Trade organizes the Computex trade show in Taipei. In 2013, it will take place June 4-8. Computex is Asia's largest technology trade show and the second largest in the world.

Delta Group, M.S. Huang, President of Delta Products Corporation led the announcements in Las Vegas on January 9, 2013. Confused because you think of faucets or airlines when you see "Delta"? Re-adjust to an electronic Delta Group with the Innergie brand of adapters and management solutions. In my multi-device, multi-adapter life, I gravitated to the Innergie USB to mini/micro/iOS converter.  You may also be familiar with their portable power products for laptops and cell phones.

The Delta mission is to provide innovative, clean and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow. Delta Group makes cooling strategies, automotive components, and other components. Delta takes it's corporate responsibilities seriously. They build green buildings and try to reduce energy use in every way possible. Andy Tung, Sales Vice President of MSI introduced two products that recently won CES awards. Their core products are graphics cards, laptops, mainboards,  and servers. The MSI Lightning Series video card allows the kind of control needed by power users such as as gamers. The second award winner is the MSI GT 70 Dragon edition notebook. IFA

By Bayle Emlein

IFA, the consumer electronic show in Berlin continues the grand tradition of German trade show or market. This one goes back to at least 1924. The Global Director of GFK, Jurgen Bonie sees four areas of growth: mobile entertainment, communication, and computing. He noted some assumptions: that China and India will continue to grow, although perhaps not at the same rate; the Euro will remain as a currency; the BRIC countries will lead growth. Developed markets in Western Europe, North America are reaching saturation. Internet access has become a feature in all digital services. Mobile internet devices were 50% of the market last year.

The demand for new and better devices will only accelerate. Consumers will replace rather than repair devices. Low prices are reducing R&D budgets; the retail scene is rapidly changing and manufacturing is becoming concentrated in just a few large companies. The market will need not only new devices but new software also. Elder care and education are two emerging markets.

Dr. Christian Golke, the COO of IFA and Messe Berlin . The fundamental task of any trade show is to create efficiency. IFA accomplishes this by holding an event the one and a half times the size of Herald Square Macy's all under one roof. Europe accounts for about 24% of the world tech market and most European economies are growing. At last year, $4.5 Billion worth of contracts were signed. In the past five years, attendance at IFA has grown steadily; international attendance has doubled.

IFA has become the world stage for announcing new products. CTIA, the wireless consortium, has been examining

Connected Home, Content, Global CE, M2M, Money, and Next Gen Networks will be combined to Super Mobility Week in September of 2014, which is partnering with IFA. This show will take place on two contents simultaneously

Matthias Rose of Frauhofer Institution spoke to the Question of what Comes Next. Fraunhofer is Europe's largest organization for applied research. Fraunhofer developments show up in many consumer applications. The next development will be 3D audio playback. You can listen to this new sound system in the Audi cars on display in the CES North Hall.

This is the tenth CES for Wayne White, Executive VP of Devices for Kobo. He reported how how much he was blown away by IFA when he attended this year for the first time. Kobo eBooks are globally significant, though no yet widely known in the US. In addition to their own eReaders, they have developed apps that allow the use of other tablets. Wayne featured the KoboArc, which accesses the 3 million Kobo books with clear, adjustable text and much more. Their main product is books, so they keep the cost of the readers as low as possible. See them in Berlin in September or anytime you want a good read.

An Interesting CES

It was an interesting CES show. Because of other obligations I'm forced to leave Vegas already but we've left two editors to keep up with the latest breaking news for you.

The  first question most people ask is: what is the big thing you saw? I guess the answer for me has to be cars. They were everywhere and all of the makers were pushing their software integration. When you look at the price premium they are charging you can see why car makers and software companys want you to buy into their sales pitch. It's a potential gold mine!!

CES First Thoughts

By Bayle Emlein

The number of specialized or focused vendor presentations in concert with the massive, sprawling, unfocused Consumer Electronics Show is amazing. One could easily spend the entire CES, or at least 18 hours a day, in Las Vegas seriously investigating what's new and promising without having a minute to peruse the show floor.

Interesting to see that IDG is sponsoring the Top 10 Brands from China event, at the Wynn this year. And that it will again be a stand-alone event, with its own invite. After a couple of years as an formal presentation in an elegant setting, the event was folded into ShowStoppers in 2012. While this gave the brands an opportunity to showcase their accomplishments to a possibly wider audience, the venue was not conducive to their highlighting the individual achievements. Can any of our readers provide some inside information? I have not been able to get the back story to find out whether the changing settings have to with politics, the logistics of signing up for a conference a year and an ocean away, or perhaps are a good-faith attempt to try out a different way of presenting.
