The Unrepairable iPad Air

The iFruit company’s iPad Air is 20 percent thinner and 28 percent lighter than the fourth-generation iPad. IHS iSuppli found that Apple also built its latest tablet for about $42 less than its third-generation iPad (comparing the WiFi-only, entry-level versions of each), while iFixit, during its own teardown, found what Apple calls a "big leap ahead" to be several steps in the wrong direction, where repairability and environmental responsibility are concerned.

"For every fixable Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, there's a Surface Pro—or in this case, an iPad Air—to saturate the market with unrepairable devices," iFixit Chief Information Architect Miro Djuric wrote in blog post Nov. 1, the day the iPad Air went on sale.

iFixit's big gripe with the iPad Air is its battery, which is secured with lots of glue, screwed in, and still requires the removal of the logic board before it can be separated from its housing. The front panel also didn't escape the glue bottle. "It's glued to the rest of the device, greatly increasing the chances of cracking the glass during a repair," said iFixit.

Celebrating the small victory of the LCD being easy to remove once the front panel was off, the team gave the iPad Air a repairability score of 2 out of 10.

Free MSFT Office Apps

How do you compete with rivals that are willing to give away a product comparable to yours?

That's Microsoft's multi-billion dollar Office dilemma as it tries to compete with Google and its free Google Apps platform. For a generation raised on Gmail, Google Drive and the Google Docs family might be good enough for some potential customers to decide they don't need the "real" Office after all.

In a bid to raise the stakes, Google is making its free Quickoffice suite a standard feature of its latest Android distribution, KitKat. Meanwhile, Apple is stumbling, cutting features as it tries to make its iWork programs compatible across iPads and Macs.

All of which explains why Microsoft is evolving its Office Web Apps at breakneck speed.

The latest Office Web App updates will go live shortly for anyone who signs in at Office.com with a free Microsoft account or a paid Office 365 account. (If you're not seeing the new features yet, be patient. A Microsoft spokesperson told me the global rollout begins today, and by end of week everyone should have access to the new Office Web Apps.) These are significant improvements, enhancing collaborative capabilities and making the free online versions credible alternatives to the paid Office 2013 and Office 365 products.

Twitter Stock Price

I will never understand stock prices. Twitter went public on Thursday and the stock price went way up. Not bad for a company that has never turned a profit. Not ever. Not even one dime!

Twitter went to great pains to not repeat the mistakes that Facebook made and, at least at this point, that may be paying off.

Of course why anyone would want to invest money in a social media company like Twitter is way beyond me. However there must be thousands of people with lots and lots of money to gamble who can’t wait to get in on the latest investing fad.

I am reminded of the great dot.com bubble of the late ‘90s. Tech stocks were grossly overvalued and finally the bottom fell out of the inflated market. Will the same thing happen again? Probably. It always has in the past.

Goodbye Blockbuster

Blockbuster plans to end all domestic retail activity, as well as its by-mail movie distribution, by early 2014, the home movie provider's parent company, DISH Network, announced Wednesday in a press release.

In the release, DISH Network also announced that while company will close all of "its approximately 300 remaining U.S.-based [and company-owned] retail stores," franchised and licensed stores will remain open.

The Blockbuster By Mail service will end mid-December and will serve existing customers until that time.

Another PC Maker is Failing

Acer CEO J.T. Wang is resigning from his post at the Taiwanese PC maker and will be replaced by president Jim Wong as part of a corporate restructuring that will try to revitalize the company's sagging fortunes.

Citing the company's recent run of poor financial results, Wang said in a statement on Tuesday: "It is time for me to hand over the responsibility to a new leadership team to path the way for a new era."

Wang will remain as company chairman until the end of his tenure in June, while Wong will take over as CEO at the start of next year.

Along with the departure of Wang, Acer will cut employee numbers by 7%, resulting in annual savings of $100 million from next year.

However, the company will take a one-time accounting charge of $150 million related to the reduction in staff and a "product plan termination", Acer said without elaborating.

In addition, a newly formed advisory committee will propose changes to the company's strategy pending approval from Acer's board of directors. Following the changes, Acer intends to introduce more competitive products in the PC, tablet and smartphone space to stabilize its market share, the company said.

The shakeup comes as PC shipments continue to decline, partly as a result of competition with tablets and smartphones that are more in demand. Acer has been one of the PC vendors worst hit by the downturn, resulting in quarterly losses.
