One
of the events I was most looking forward to at CES was the Casio press
conference. Over the past few years this has always been a great event
where their CEO would introduce their latest wonderful photography
products. We have seen some great cameras and software in the past and
looked forward to this year’s announcements.
Prior
to the event we were standing in line and had a great chat with their
new PR people. They promised us better responses in the future because
the previous staff was inadequate. It looked like it was going to be a
great press conference! The only disappointment was the press kit was a
plastic bracelet and not a USB drive mockup of the camera we were
waiting to see.
Once
we went in we took a seat, got a bottle of water (it is a desert you
know) and waited patiently. The first couple of product announcements
were routine, dull things like watches. OK but nothing good yet.
Then
we got to the meat of the meal!! The new Signage Division!! Huh???
Signage? What the hell is a signage division? It turns out we had a nice
presentation showing their new signage product (starting at $10k) with
examples of how it works. I could waste your time and mine by going into
detail but I won’t. If you own a small business and want to spend a lot
of money just email us and we’ll fill you in.
After
the press conference we asked their PR people about their camera
division and got the bad news: Casio only sells digital cameras in Japan
now. They have pulled out of the American market completely. It’s said
but it looks like another camera company has thrown in the towel. The
power of the Smartphone with a camera is taking over the basic camera
level completely.
