Apple Buys into Indoor Mapping

Once again the iFruit company is trying to catch up to Google. Apple has acquired mapping startup WiFiSlam for around $20 million. WiFiSlam is developing an indoor location service for smartphones and that may be the next big thing in mapping. Google introduced their iPhone and Android app last November so Apple is lagging behind again.

WiFiSlam allows smartphones to pinpoint their location to an accuracy of 2.5 meters using only ambient Wi-Fi signals that are already present in buildings. We can think of a slew of great uses for this kind of app. It will be great to get step-by-step indoor navigation in malls, airports and especially trade shows.
