One of the companies I talked with at Storage Visions (which preceded CES). They are experts at data recovery from all types of devices and any operating system.

They can usually recover data from devices that are almost completely destroyed. They showed examples of laptops that had been run over by a car, computers that had been burned to a crisp and many more horrendous examples.

And they can often complete the job in 24 hours or less!

Their facilities include a very large clean room with complete security, so your data cannot be compromised by outsiders. This may be a risk with other recovery firms.

Here are a couple of suggestions from them to avoid data disasters:

• Scan all incoming data for viruses, including packaged software
• Connect to a UPS to protect against power surges
• Avoid static discharge when handling media

And a few ideas when disaster strikes:

• Back up immediately if possible
• Shut down the computer to avoid further damage
• Never assume data is unrecoverable
