Samsung Retakes the Lead from Apple

Samsung has regained the smartphone sales crown from rival Apple. Well, at least according to new research data recently released this week.

During the first quarter of 2015, the South Korean mobile giant managed to ship a total of 83.2 million units of its smartphones around the world, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics. By doing so, Samsung essentially captured 24 percent of the global smartphone market.

A 24 percent market share may not be an improvement over Samsung's 31 percent market share one year ago, but it still manages to beat the current 17.7 percent market share of Apple, which shipped 61.2 million units of smartphones during the first quarter of the year. Apple's market share in the recently concluded quarter may have bested the 15.3 percent market share it captured last year, but compared to the previous quarter's 19.6 percent market share, it is certainly a dip in form for the iPhone maker.

As explained by Neil Mawston, executive director of Strategy Analytics, the Asian market remained a challenge for Samsung, but in terms of its global smartphone sales, the South Korean phone maker has stabilized enough to beat its rival Apple and regain its title as the biggest smartphone seller in the world by unit sales volume.
