We
have been long time advocates of turning off some of the most common
features in Smartphones when they aren’t being used. Functions like GPS
and WiFi are enormous power drainers and have no practical use most of
the time.
Now
we’ve learned that many major retailers are tracking the movements of
their customers by using the WiFi chips in their phones. National
retailers like Nordstrom and Home Depot, working with a company called Euclid Analytics,
have devised a method for tracking shoppers in their stores. The
service identifies shoppers' smartphones by requests the devices make
for Wi-Fi, even if they aren't connecting to the store's network.
In
this age of rapidly diminishing privacy this is just one more example
of why people need to be alert. You never know when you’re being tracked
and by whom. It isn’t just government drones you need to watch out for,
it’s shopping at the mall too. Be aware and be alert.
