Ubuntu on Smartphones?

Canonical, the parent company of Ubuntu, has just announced an interesting product: Ubuntu for Android Smartphones. How the heck will this work?!? Well, not very easily as it turns out. Here’s the deal:

Smartphone makers will pre-load the software on their Android phones. The phone will continue to work as a normal Android phone until a monitor and keyboard are attached. The phone will then magically turn into an Ubuntu computer using the Unity desktop. All of your data, contacts, schedule, etc. will still be available. Since connectivity will be crucial, it’s hoped that there will be 4G LTE available.

To us this is really an interesting idea. Whether or not companies will be willing to invest the time and money needed to make this a reality is another question.
