Lepow Modre Bluetooth Speaker Review

By George Harding

There are many Bluetooth speakers available today and this is one of the best. It’s stylish, colorful and has great frequency response.

The product was modeled after an elephant’s trunk, say the company. Whether you think the two are similar, the design is quite attractive.  It’s quite small, only 3 ½” tall, 2.3” in diameter.  It’s in the form of a cylinder with the top cut at a slant and bent ever so slightly.  It comes in three colors, blue, green and orange.

I tried it out with several of my iPhone songs. I found the frequency response very good at both the high end and the low. My testing of the high frequencies is limited to what I can hear, which tops out at about 10,000 Hz. The low frequencies come through with no distortion that I could hear. This is remarkable quality for such a small unit.

It’s powered by an internal rechargeable lithium battery that is charged from any source with a USB port.  The unit comes with a cable with a USB plug on one end, a micro-USB plug on the other. The back panel has the input port for this. Sound is 360 degrees. Play time is up to 7 hours, according to the company.

Charging is shown on the unit by a red LED on the back near the base. The bottom of the unit has an On/Off switch. When turned on, a blue LED light shines intermittently. The back panel also has an audio out jack for listening on other devices.

Bluetooth operates at UHF frequencies and facilitates transmission of information between devices for short distances, 10 meters or 390 feet. When you turn on the speaker and go to the Bluetooth feature on you smartphone, you can “pair” the two devices.

Interestingly, the word "Bluetooth" is an anglicized version of a Scandinavian phrase, the epithet of the tenth-century king Harald Bluetooth who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom, according to a legend, introducing Christianity as well. Thought you’d want to know that!

There is a microphone built into the speaker for phone communication. It is hands-free and can be used for responding to a call, as well as making a call (if your smartphone is capable of the latter).

I found this to be a durable speaker with excellent frequency response available at a very reasonable price.
