Notes From Storage Visions

By Bayle Emlein

In his introduction to the 2015 Storage Visions Conference preceding the International CES technology show Andy Marken noted how much the world has changed. In terms of entertainment, Netflix leads the pack. While we don't all have 4K TV's, they set the standard for storage and online streaming. 8K is on the way, and film is an archival curiosity.

Harmonic's Ian Trow started with the obvious: Data needs are changing, more of our lives are online or are run via a server. The world is unevenly covered by infrastructure. Legacy infrastructure in the more mature markets poses another kind of challenge as both transfer speed and storage demands grow. Data security poses an ongoing problem. (In all this online security furor, no one is bringing up the privacy concerns of the paper world such as unauthorized copies, loose lips of the people who write and copy, prying eyes and fingers).
