Apps vs. Software

We have reached the point in time where big software is close to being dead. By big software I mean the kind of stuff we all used to buy in stores like CompUSA. It came in boxes with thick instruction manuals and lots of disks. It weighed a ton and cost a whole lot of money. That was how companies like MSFT, Corel, Borland, Novell and countless others made their money. And they made a lot of it.

Today the market has totally changed. Today Apps rule. There are individual apps for anything you want to use a computer for. And the apps are all small software packages that are easily downloaded and are either free or very inexpensive. Todays computer user is using a smartphone, or a tablets, or a Netbook, or a notebook or a desktop and they are using exactly the same apps on all of them.

It's a very different world than a few years ago. And a much better world in my opinion. We have much lower cost for the consumer and the user isn't being forced to buy unwanted, bloated software "suites" any longer. It may hurt MSFT's bottom line but it helps the rest of us.
