Ubuntu 11.10 first impressions

I've finally had a chance to try out Ubuntu 11.10 this week. As is my habit, I created a bootable USB drive and tested the software on a number of computers. Here are my first thoughts:

1- the USB drive creation process was simple and worked effortlessly. The Universal USB Installer v.1.8.6.8 is a great tool that every user should have in their tool box.
2- I've gotten used to the new interface and it works very well. It you haven't tried Ubuntu in the past year you should give it a shot.
3- WiFi connectivity worked very well with every computer we tried, except for Lenovo Netbooks. We've always had problems with the Broadcom drivers that come with Ubuntu and this version still had the problems.
4- We couldn't get the Samsung Chromebook to boot from the USB drive but that's because of the Chromebook's hardware, not a Linux problem.

We'll continue to test this version of Ubuntu and we'll have periodic updates on this blog. Stay tuned.
