I’m reaching one of those landmark birthdays on October 17th and that means it’s time to look back on life. For my whole life, or for the parts of my life that I remember, I’ve looked at turning 65 as being really old. And I mean really old. You know, the grim reaper is honing his scythe getting ready to harvest my old bones. That kind of old.
But now that I’m there things seem to be a little different. Admittedly I haven’t had a day job since 2002 when I retired from the FAA after 36+ years as an Air Traffic Controller, but I still put in full days at work. I’m not sitting on the porch in a rocker waiting to die, I have more things to do than I ever imagined I would.
Thanks to all of our subscribers and the followers of our blog. Your interest in our work makes my next few years very exciting. I am looking forward to seeing where the next 65 years will take me.
As I look back on my 65 years I amazed at how the world has changed. As a child in the 50’s telephones were big black monsters with rotary dials that were hard wired into the wall. There were still long distance operators, party lines were very common and phone booths were everywhere.
Televisions were just starting to be popular and color was still years away. We had an antenna on the roof and could receive 3, 6, and 10 from Philly. IF we rotated the antenna we could get 2, 5, 9 and 11 from NY (badly however).
No family had two cars and many didn’t even have one. People walked to work or took city buses.
Every student walked to elementary school and went home for lunch. There were no school buses and no school cafeteria.
I think there were probably a grand total of 2 or 3 computers in the whole world. My, my, how times have changed!
